Valletta, 27 June 2013: MTV’s annual live music extravaganza Isle of MTV has once again rocked Mediterranean hot spot Malta, with international superstars Jessie J, Rita Ora, Rudimental and Afrojack giving 50,000 music fans a night to remember. For the seventh consecutive year, the spectacular Il-Fosos Square in Floriana played host to one of the biggest nights on the international music calendar, delivered in partnership with Malta Tourism Authority. The show will air across all MTV channels around the world in a 60-minute Isle of MTV Malta programme from 03 August and it will also air as part of the World Stage franchise.
For the first time ever, this year’s stage was transformed into a digital stargate – an amazing tunnel of artificial lights, focusing the crowd’s attention on a central LED screen creating a mesmerising 3D effect.
Rudimental, one of the biggest UK acts to break on to the international music scene in 2013, kicked off the night with their breakthrough UK number one single Feel the Love and rocked the Isle of MTV stage with their powerful dance anthems Not Giving In and Waiting All Night. With the crowd rocking out in the summer sun, the electro quartet from North London had them screaming for more with their high energy beats and unique soulful drum-and-bass sound.
Next up, one of the hottest new acts on the scene and the name on everybody’s lips, Rita Ora, kept the momentum high with her unique blend of super charged R&B, pop, rock and funk. Ora had the crowd jumping with the explosive Hot Right Now, RIP and How We Do (Party), with a dance-collective made up of storm-troopers, performing around two supped up supermarket trolley’s outfitted with loud speakers. With her blazing white suit and vibrant red lips, Rita Ora gave an energetic performance showing everyone exactly why she’s ‘glorious notorious’.
As the evening set in and Il-Fosos Square was illuminated by the fluorescent Isle of MTV stage lighting, ‘Do It Like A Dude’ star Jessie J burst on to the stage in black hot pants and cropped multi-coloured shirt, to deliver her signature vocal driven performance. Showcasing her powerhouse musical style that mixes soul vocals with contemporary R&B, pop, electro-pop, and hip-hop beats, the fierce songstress had everyone on their feet chanting the lyrics to popular dance anthems Price Tag, Who's Laughing Now and Domino. As hit single Laserlight filled the square, so did the glow of thousands of mobile phones. Calling out to the crowd “enjoy life and live for the moment” Jessie J thanked the European fans for “one amazing party”, before closing with an electrifying performance of hot new single WILD from her highly anticipated second studio album.
Bringing this year’s Isle of MTV to a climactic close was multi-award winning, platinum selling producer and electro-dance DJ Afrojack. The two-time Grammy award-winning producer and DJ had the crowd thumping to a slew of hard-hitting underground hits, including platinum selling dance anthem Take Over Control, Titanium and As Your Friend, the global star’s latest collaboration with US singer/songwriter Chris Brown.
To see the very best of Isle of MTV 2013, the open-air concert will broadcast as a 60-minute Isle of MTV Malta show across MTV’s international network of channels and platforms from 03 August as well as part of the MTV World Stage franchise.
Delivered through a successful partnership with Malta Tourism Authority for the seventh year, Isle of MTV and has become one of the must-attend highlights of the summer music calendar, attracting fans from all over Europe to party in one of the most entrancing settings in the Mediterranean.

About Jessie J
Since winning the acclaimed BBC Sound Polls of 2010 and Brits Critics Choice for 2011, Jessie J exploded onto the music scene with her hit single “Do It Like A Dude”. After topping the charts in nineteen countries including the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, and New Zealand with the song "Price Tag", she released her debut album, “Who You Are” (2011) which charted at number two in the UK. Other releases from the album included "Nobody's Perfect", "Who's Laughing Now", and "Who You Are" which all charted within the top 20 in the UK, but the release of fifth single "Domino" spawned more international chart success, peaking at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, and becoming her second UK number one. The seventh single to be released from “Who You Are”, "LaserLight", became her sixth top ten single from the album, making her the first British female artist to have six top ten singles on one album. Aside from her musical career, Jessie J serves as a coach and mentor on television show, The Voice UK.
About Rita Ora
Buzz acts come and go, but the pertinent feeling amongst those that have heard the results of her knockout first round in the recording studio as a bona fide solo star is that the effect Rita Ora has locally is about to translate to the upper terrains of the global pop market. A composite of street-smarts of the metropolitan life she was schooled in and pure, urgent, otherworldly star quality, she makes for a brilliantly contradictory mix.
Rita is one of the few British female singers that has emerged singing the opening bars of her career ready for world star status. She has already made British chart history as the vocalist on one of the countries’ first ever drum and bass number one singles, DJ Fresh’s "Hot Right Now". Rita’s debut UK single "R.I.P." is a thrusting, compelling ode to lost love, sitting around the peripheral borders of pop, R&B, rock and rave and her debut U.S. single, “How We Do (Party),” is an infectious pop-rock party anthem paired with her stunning vocals.
Bursting out of London’s underground music scene with its thrilling world of pirate radio, crude DJ set ups, improvised studios, and bleeding edge beats come Rudimental (Piers Aggett, Kesi Dryden, Amir Amor and Leon Rolle): A pioneering melting-pot collective who have taken the British music scene by storm, championed for their uncompromising approach to music-making whilst avoiding rigid classification.
Taking a “traditional” songwriting approach as much as an electronic one in their music making, Rudimental mix live instrumentation (Hammond, Rhodes, horns, live bass etc) with digital programming. As Rudimental’s Piers says, “Our sound is organic. It’s the result of years of raving, listening to pirate radio, listening to dubs, to tapes older brothers would bring home, and being inspired by all of it. We’re products of our individual musical journeys and of London”.
In less than 2 years, Afrojack (real name Nick van de Wall) has become one of electronic dance music’s major icons. Born in Spijkenisse, Holland, the two time Grammy award winner has fast become a multi-award winning, platinum-selling producer, providing an explosive take on the current state of dance music across the board. With a slew of hard-hitting underground releases born from his own club music brand Wall Recordings, he exploded on to the international music scene in 2011 with the unveiling of “Take Over Control” - an instant worldwide club and chart hit going platinum in the USA.
